Turnkey Seawater Desalination and Ultrapure Water Production Facility for 1360 MW Thermal Power Plant
We implemented a major water treatment project in Zonguldak, producing process water of varying qualities from seawater, for a 1,360 MW thermal power plant, one of Türkiye's largest power generation facilities. The project was designed to meet all the water needs of the plant's critical units—boilers, cooling towers, and demineralization systems—from a single source, uninterruptedly, and with high efficiency.
Challenge: Need for Uninterrupted and High-Quality Water
The efficiency and operational safety of a thermal power plant are directly related to the quality of the water used. Our client required both ultra-low conductivity (<0.05 µS/cm) deionized water for boiler feedwater and high volumes of demineralized and desalinated water for other processes. The primary objective of the project was to reliably meet this need with seawater without relying on freshwater sources.
Our Technologically Superior Solution
To meet this challenging goal, we designed a multi-stage, technologically advanced treatment process. We installed a fully automated system capable of producing 880 m³ of desaline, 700 m³ of demineralized, and 300 m³ of ultrapure deionized water per hour.
Advanced Pretreatment: The variable pollution load of seawater is completely removed by the Ultrafiltration (UF) system, ensuring the life and performance of Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes.
Energy Efficient Desalination: Thanks to the ERI brand energy recovery devices used in the Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) unit, energy costs were minimized and sustainable and low-cost water production was achieved.
Ultrapure Water Production: After SWRO , Second Stage Reverse Osmosis (BWRO) and Mixed Bed Resin (MBDI) units reduced the conductivity of water to a record level of <0.05 µS/cm.
Technology that Reduces Chemical Consumption: Degasifiers integrated into our process eliminate the consumption of chemicals required for pH balancing by removing carbon dioxide from the water.
Environmental Awareness and Material Quality: While an environmentally friendly discharge is ensured with the Neutralization unit that adjusts the pH balance of the wash water, the long life of the facility is guaranteed by using Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steel piping against corrosion.
Results and Customer Benefits
At the end of the project, results exceeded all our client's expectations. The ultrapure water required for even the plant's most sensitive equipment was supplied uninterrupted and reliably. A high level of automation facilitated operation, while energy recovery systems minimized operational costs. This project is concrete proof of how efficiently and sustainably the water needs of large-scale industrial facilities can be met from the sea.
