Aliağa Power Plant Water Treatment Plant Modernization and Capacity Increase

To meet the growing water needs of the power plant operating in Aliağa, Izmir, and ensure a continuous water supply, we modernized the existing water treatment system and increased its capacity. The project eliminated the plant's dependence on foreign water by converting seawater into a primary source, replacing the insufficient surface water supply.


Challenge: Insufficient Resources and Complex Operating Conditions


Our client's existing conventional deionization (DI)-based pure water production system was not only insufficient in capacity but also posed a risk of water shortages due to fluctuations in the surface water supply. Furthermore, the regeneration steps for anionic and cationic resins required complex operational processes and increased operating costs due to chemical consumption.


Our Solution: Reliable and Efficient Membrane Technology


To overcome these challenges, we developed a fully automated solution based on modern membrane technologies, boasting a capacity of 2x75 m³/hour. Pretreatment Assurance: Before seawater treatment began, self-cleaning mechanical filters, sand filters, and Ultrafiltration (UF) units were used to prepare excellent quality feedwater for the sensitive RO membranes.


Two-Stage Reverse Osmosis (RO): Seawater RO (SWRO) and Second-Stage RO (2nd Pass RO) systems provide both desalination and high-purity water production in a single, integrated system.


Operational Ease: The new system eliminated the complex regeneration steps of the existing DI system, significantly increasing the service life and capacity of the existing Mixed Bed (MBDI) unit.


Results and Customer Benefits


Thanks to this technological modernization project, our customer has gained an uninterrupted water supply from the sea. Complex and costly regeneration processes have been eliminated, increasing operational efficiency. The plant can now continue operations with reliable, high-quality water, unaffected by fluctuations in the water supply.
