600 m³/hour Capacity Industrial Desalination Facility for Iron and Steel Production

We built a massive 600 m³/hour desalination plant to secure the water needs of one of Türkiye's leading metallurgical plants located in Dilovası, İzmit. This strategic investment, whose growth potential was limited by limited freshwater resources, has now secured an uninterrupted water supply by efficiently utilizing seawater, overcoming a major obstacle to its production targets.

The Challenge: Water Scarcity and Harsh Sea Conditions

Iron and steel production requires enormous amounts of water to cool machinery and products in units such as rolling mills and steel mills. The Gulf region, where the project is located, is not only at risk of water scarcity but also faces challenging raw water conditions in the Sea of Marmara, such as industrial pollution and mucilage. Therefore, the system needed to be both high-capacity and highly resilient to these challenging conditions.

Our Solution: Durable and High-Efficiency System Design

Taking into account the unique conditions of the Sea of Marmara, we designed a pretreatment and desalination system that offers maximum efficiency and durability. Special Pretreatment for Harsh Conditions: High-flux Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were selected to combat high industrial pollution and mucilage problems, ensuring uninterrupted and stable system operation.

Superior Corrosion Protection: High-quality stainless steel materials such as Duplex and Super Duplex were used in all piping and equipment to protect against the corrosive effects of seawater.

High-Capacity Production: With a capacity of 600 m³ per hour, the facility now single-handedly meets the makeup water needs of all the plant's cooling towers, including ladle cooling, rolling units, and hot gas stacks.

Results and Customer Benefits

This project was more than just a water treatment plant; it was a strategic move that secured the future of our customer's investment and production. By utilizing seawater instead of limited resources, the plant can now operate at full capacity without the risk of water shortages. The robust system we built, despite harsh sea conditions, is proof of the reliability we can achieve with our technological solutions, even in heavy industries like iron and steel.
