Caribbean Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plants

We installed two modern domestic wastewater treatment plants on the Caribbean islands of Tortola and Burtpoint to protect the region's ecological balance and public health. Previously discharged untreated into the ocean through deep discharge, posing a threat to both the environment and wildlife, this project treats wastewater to a quality far exceeding international standards and returns it to nature.

Challenge: Preventing Environmental Pollution

The islands' biggest environmental problem was the untreated domestic wastewater generated by tens of thousands of people being discharged directly into the ocean. This situation harmed the ocean ecosystem and posed serious risks to human health. The project aimed to provide an effective, reliable, and sustainable solution to address this situation.

Our Solution: Space-Saving, Fast-To-Install, and Efficient Facilities

We selected innovative technologies that prioritize both efficiency and ease of installation for the facilities, which will serve a total population of 15,000.

Effective Biological Treatment: The Extended Aeration Activated Sludge process removes organic contaminants from wastewater with high efficiency.

Maximum Space Savings: The aeration and sedimentation units were designed as concentric rings (sedimentation on the inside, aeration on the outside), maximizing space savings on the limited island land. This compact design was one of the key factors that increased the project's feasibility.

Fast and Easy Assembly: Glass-fused steel sheet plates were used in the construction of the tanks. This modern technology significantly shortened construction times compared to reinforced concrete structures, enabling rapid project commissioning.

Modern Sludge Management: Excess sludge generated by treatment was reduced in volume using a screw press sludge dewatering unit, facilitating its disposal.

Results and Customer Benefits

At the end of the project, wastewater from the cities of Tortola and Burtpoint was treated to the highest standards without harming the environment or living organisms. Uncontrolled discharges into the ocean have come to an end, replaced by an environmentally friendly, safe, and clean discharge. Our innovative and compact design has made efficient use of the islands' valuable land, and our rapid installation technology has quickly addressed urgent needs.
